Sometimes when a team goes on the road, we have a tendency to treat the weekend as almost a recruiting off week. There will not be a long visitor list circulating Friday night, there will not be recruits standing along the Oregon sideline during warmups and nobody is going to walk out of Autzen talking about the atmosphere.
That does not mean recruiting stops.
Oregon’s coaches are already in Stillwater, and one thing I am curious about is whether some of them find time to make the roughly four-hour trip toward the Dallas area while they are there. I do not know that they will. Game preparation obviously comes first, but staffs use these road trips when schedules allow to get into schools, see players and continue relationships that sometimes began months or even years earlier. With Oregon already in that part of the country, I would not be surprised if somebody finds a way to make use of it.
There is another part of this that probably matters even more. Oregon did not have to play particularly well against Boise State to show recruits one of the biggest things it has to sell. Autzen was loud, the crowd stayed involved and it felt like a major college football game even while the Ducks were struggling to take control of it.
That matters.
The recruits who were there saw what the place looks like when the season actually starts, not during a spring practice or summer visit when everybody has more time and everything is a little more controlled. Now those same players — along with plenty who were not in Eugene — get to see something different. Oregon has to go on the road for the first time and show what the program looks like when the environment belongs to somebody else.
Every game becomes part of recruiting eventually. Home or road, somebody is watching.
We went through some of the Boise State visitor list Monday, but I wanted to come back to several of these recruitments because the more I look at Oregon’s early 2028 board, the more I think there were a handful of visits last weekend that could matter quite a bit down the road. We are a long way from knowing how most of these end, and I am always a little cautious about getting too excited about 2028 recruiting while we are barely into the 2026 season, but there are some names here that I suspect we are going to be talking about for a long time.
