Oregon enters fall camp with fewer obvious roster holes than most teams in the country.
That does not mean the Ducks enter without questions.
The important distinction is that most of Oregon’s questions are not about whether the roster contains enough talent. They are about which talented players can be trusted, where they fit and how much the coaching staff can place on their shoulders before the season begins.
Dan Lanning’s central task is not finding a team. Oregon has largely known what its roster would look like since spring practice.
The transfer-portal calendar gave the Ducks an opportunity to work through the spring and summer without wondering which players might leave once practice ended.
“You get to the end of the spring, you say, ‘OK, this is who we’ve got. You’ve got to work with the guys you have,’” Lanning said. “I think it created a little bit more of a focus on improvement rather than figuring out, ‘Is this guy comfortable in his role? Does he want to leave? Does he want to stay?’”
That continuity allowed Oregon to spend months developing the roster it will take into the season.
“I think us having the chance to walk into the spring, know who our team is in spring ball and work with that team all spring and summer, I think it’s a huge benefit,” Lanning said.
Fall camp is where that development must begin producing defined answers.
Above the line matters more than the first depth chart
There will be predictable attention paid to Oregon’s starting lineups.
