The Scouting Room: Nebraska Is Better Than Its Ranking — and Built to Punish Oregon’s Current Problems

The models see Nebraska as a top-20 team because its strengths reinforce one another. Oregon’s challenge is finding the few places where the Huskers can actually be stressed.

The Wednesday War Room established the broad outline. Nebraska has a veteran dual-threat quarterback in Anthony Colandrea, a productive young back in Jamal Rule, enough receiving talent to punish overreaction and a defense that has been extremely difficult to run against or sustain drives against. The Scouting Room needs to go deeper than identifying those pieces, because what makes Nebraska dangerous is how well they fit together.

The broader models agree this is much better than an ordinary 5-1 team coming off a close loss to Indiana. Nebraska is currently 12th in FPI, 14th in SP+ and 20th in FEI, with the blended FPI/SP+/FEI profile placing the Cornhuskers 16th nationally. F+ had Nebraska 16th through Week 5, before the Indiana game, while Game on Paper’s FBS-only model currently ranks the Huskers 13th nationally in net adjusted EPA per play.

That consensus matters because Nebraska’s early schedule created an obvious reason for skepticism. Ohio, Bowling Green and North Dakota allowed the Cornhuskers to build enormous raw numbers before Big Ten play really tested them, but the Indiana game did not expose Nebraska as a statistical illusion.
