Take One: Letting Athletes Be Human
On Sunday, I wrote a little about the tradition of the U.S. Open on Father’s Day weekend. I would have mentioned it even if a former Oregon golfer had not been sitting on a commanding lead heading into the final round, but Wyndham Clark being part of the story added some obvious flavor.
Clark’s win at Shinnecock Hills was his second U.S. Open title, and he held off Sam Burns by one shot to get there. It was also a complicated win because Clark did not enter Sunday as some universally embraced figure chasing a feel-good coronation. A year after the Oakmont locker room incident, where he damaged a locker after missing the cut, he was carrying more than a scorecard around the course. He was carrying a reputation.
