TAKE ONE: ROOM TO BREATHE
While I know the NCAA did not plan its recruiting calendar around my needs, the dead period always seems to arrive at exactly the right time.
There are stretches on the sports calendar when everything feels like reaction. Official visits stack on top of each other. Commitments hit. Cancellations change the shape of the board. Predictions move. Rankings get updated. Scouting reports need to be written. Message board questions need answers. Texts arrive late at night. A single note can change the direction of a story you thought you had figured out two hours earlier.
That is part of the work, and most of the time, it is also part of the fun.
But there is a difference between covering movement and understanding meaning. During the busiest parts of the recruiting calendar, the job is often to stay close enough to the moment to not miss what is happening. Then, almost mercifully, the calendar forces everyone to pause. Coaches cannot host. Recruits go home. The road quiets down. The next wave of decisions still matters, but the pace changes just enough to let the dust settle.
For a writer, that is not empty space. It is useful space.
It is the point where the question changes from, “What just happened?” to something more important: “What did we actually learn?”
