Take Two: Be Careful Deciding What Something Is Too Soon

Oregon spent the bye week evaluating players who are still becoming something. Maybe that is also the right way to look at an Oregon team with eight regular-season games still left to play.

There is something dangerous about October, and I do not mean dangerous in the football sense. Nobody needs another speech about surviving the grind of a season or taking things one week at a time. Coaches have that territory pretty well covered, and Dan Lanning could probably recite those lines in his sleep by now.

I mean dangerous for those of us watching all of this because October is about the time when we start deciding we know things. Four football games have been played, so we know what Oregon is. A high school junior has collected enough scholarship offers and enough stars next to his name, so we know what he is. A recruit commits somewhere, so his recruitment is finished. A team loses once, so we understand its flaw. It wins a big game at USC, so perhaps we understand the correction.

I am increasingly suspicious of all of it, and that is where this week’s Take Two starts.
