Life has a way of throwing curveballs at us, often in ways that feel small in the moment but still change the shape of a day.

Saturday was supposed to be simple. A four-mile morning walk with Fiji. A warm summer day. Some rest, some quiet, and maybe the rare weekend rhythm that does not feel dictated by a clock.

Then the day changed.

My wife had to make a trip to the doctor for what turned out to be a mild case of food poisoning. Fiji had to go to day care. The quiet structure of the day disappeared, and with it went the version of Saturday I had imagined when I woke up.

That is not a complaint. In the grand scheme, everything was fine. My wife is fine. Fiji was fine. The day simply became something different than what it was supposed to be.

Recruiting weekends can feel that way, too.
