There was probably a version of Oregon’s recruiting weekend that looked a little cleaner than this one.
The No. 2 Ducks would score early, put Boise State away and spend the second half turning a packed Autzen Stadium into a three-hour recruiting commercial for one of the better groups of 2028 prospects Oregon will host all season. Instead, Boise State made Oregon work for just about everything in a 34-27 win that included mistakes, missed opportunities and considerably more fourth-quarter stress than most people expected. I am not sure that hurt Oregon on the recruiting side nearly as we always think.
Recruits got the Autzen atmosphere everyone wanted them to see, but they also got something a blowout would not have provided. They watched Oregon get pushed, watched the crowd become a factor when the game tightened and then got a look behind the curtain afterward as Dan Lanning and his staff dealt with a win that clearly did not satisfy them.
That distinction showed up repeatedly in the reaction coming out of the weekend. The recruits noticed Oregon’s mistakes, but they also noticed the response. They saw a team that had to make plays late instead of simply spending the fourth quarter celebrating, and some of the most important visitors got considerably more access to the program after the game than they would have gotten from simply watching four quarters of football.
The result is that I think Oregon came out of its first major recruiting weekend in better shape with several players than it entered it.
In at least one recruitment, I think the Ducks may now be the team to beat.
