There are recruiting weekends where the visitor list itself becomes the story. Oregon had one of those against Boise State, when enough high-level prospects were inside Autzen Stadium that simply keeping track of everyone became part of the job.
Friday night against Portland State will be different. Most high school players have games of their own, so Oregon was never likely to put together another enormous list, but I do not think the size of the group tells us very much about the importance of the weekend. In some ways, a smaller group can be more useful because the staff has more time to spend with the players who are there.
This one is really about 2028.
Four current 2027 commitments are expected back in Eugene in Zane Rowe, Malakai Taufoou, Malachi Garlington and George VanSandt, giving Oregon an experienced group of future Ducks around the younger players making the trip. The more interesting part of the weekend, however, comes from Josiah Boyd, Steeler Wesley and Kameron Battle, along with Jayce Halasz making his own visit Saturday after playing Friday night.
Boyd is the obvious place to start because his recruitment has moved considerably since we first circled this Portland State visit several weeks ago. What initially looked like another important game-day trip now has the potential to become one of the defining visits in Oregon’s early 2028 recruiting cycle.
