Overview
Malachi Garlington is not a typical in-state wide receiver take.
Oregon’s offer made this recruitment worth watching because the Ducks have been selective with local prospects under Dan Lanning. When Oregon moves on an in-state player, especially after a live evaluation or late-cycle push, it usually means the staff sees a combination of traits that can translate beyond the regional level.
Garlington has those traits.
The 6-foot-3 Nelson High School product brings size, strength, ball skills and real production after the catch. The easy evaluation would be to label him as a big-bodied boundary receiver, but his junior film shows more than that. He is not just winning on fades and jump balls. He is catching screens, slants, crossers and quick throws near the line of scrimmage, then turning those touches into explosive plays.
That is what makes him interesting.
Garlington has the frame to project outside, but he also has enough run-after-catch value to be used creatively. He can win vertically, work through contact, make contested catches and create with the ball in his hands. Add in his basketball background and defensive snaps, and the profile starts to look like a multi-sport athlete whose football ceiling may still be climbing.
