Oregon’s comeback victory over Nebraska provided a welcome change in the direction of a season that had become increasingly difficult to understand. The Ducks finally found enough offense to win when it mattered most, but the celebration did little to resolve the questions that followed them into another week of practice. There is still uncertainty at quarterback, the offensive line remains a work in progress and injuries continue to force younger players into more significant roles.

Yet there is something different about this Oregon team than the one that walked off the field following its loss to Oklahoma State. The defense has become increasingly reliable, younger players are beginning to embrace meaningful opportunities and the coaching staff appears more willing to adjust its approach to the personnel available rather than insist on an offensive identity that no longer fits its circumstances. That doesn’t mean the Ducks have solved their problems, but it does suggest they’re beginning to develop a more realistic understanding of how this particular team needs to win football games.

Throughout the week, Dan Lanning and his players repeatedly returned to preparation, communication and the importance of understanding individual responsibilities. Those themes are hardly unusual inside a football program, but the circumstances surrounding Oregon’s recent performances have given them considerably more meaning as the Ducks prepare for Saturday’s noon kickoff at Illinois.

Quarterback Competition Continues, but Raiola Has Momentum

Wednesday brought no definitive announcement regarding Oregon’s starting quarterback, although Lanning continued to acknowledge the importance of Dylan Raiola’s fourth-quarter performance against Nebraska. The quarterback competition remains open, with Raiola and Brock Thomas continuing to receive practice repetitions, and the evaluation process extends beyond what happened during the previous game even as Raiola’s performance has clearly strengthened his position.

“Every week’s week to week, and I think that’s the best thing that those guys have recognized is we’ve got to go out and work again, right?” Lanning said Wednesday. “It’s your body of work. It’s what you do in practice. They’re attacking it and both getting reps and doing a great job of that.”

That follows Lanning’s Monday explanation of why Thomas remained on the field through three quarters against Nebraska despite Oregon’s offensive struggles. The coach emphasized the difficulty of judging a quarterback exclusively through his most recent possessions, particularly when practice performance and ball security remain important elements of the decision.

“There’s always competition in positions,” Lanning said. “There’s a body of work that happens between Monday and Friday that is used to evaluate that. Brock, the week before, went 11 for 15. And you can say, oh, the first series he threw two incomplete passes. Why didn’t you switch them right then? If we switched every time somebody made a mistake, we’d have a lot of switches within ball games. That’s just not the way it works. Players have to have an opportunity to get into rhythm.”

Thomas never established that rhythm against Nebraska, something Lanning readily acknowledged, but the circumstances of the game created an unusual calculation. Oregon’s defense was performing well enough to keep the Ducks competitive, making the possibility of a costly turnover particularly significant. Eventually, however, it became apparent that the offense needed more than simply protecting possession, and Raiola provided the downfield passing threat that helped change the game.

“But Dylan came in and gave us a spark. He played with great confidence and did an unbelievable job,” Lanning said. “But there will always be competition, right? And it’s always about the body of work. But the way things finished there, Dylan played well. He did some things really well. So I think the hot hand, kind of like it played into Brock’s ability to be the guy, that could certainly play into this week as well for Dylan.”

Raiola’s own comments Wednesday reflected a player who understands the importance of preparation but also recognizes that his recent experiences have required considerable emotional resilience. Rather than treating the uncertainty surrounding his role as something that needs to be resolved publicly, Raiola has concentrated on controlling his preparation and maintaining the relationships that allow Oregon’s quarterback room to function despite the competition.

“My faith keeps me grounded,” Raiola said. “My mom’s a prayer angel. She’s always praying for myself, my family and also my entire team. I just have a lot of support. My teammates are great. They never wavered their confidence in me, Brock, KJ, any of the QBs.”

That support extends to Dante Moore, whose experience within Oregon’s offense continues to provide value even while his playing status remains uncertain. Raiola described Moore as an important resource in the meeting room, particularly because of his familiarity with the system and his ability to explain how certain plays develop against different defensive looks. Lanning declined to provide a specific medical update on Moore, leaving Oregon’s quarterback situation unsettled entering the latter portion of the practice week.

Simplifying the Offense and Finding Answers Up Front

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of Oregon’s offensive preparations has been Lanning’s emphasis on fundamentals rather than continually expanding the playbook to compensate for injured personnel. The Ducks have experienced significant changes at quarterback and receiver, leaving the offensive staff attempting to develop chemistry among combinations that were not necessarily expected to carry substantial responsibilities when the season began. Lanning explained Wednesday that the solution involves identifying concepts the available players can execute consistently rather than attempting to create a different answer for every possible defensive look.

“I think you got to go back to your roots of like what is our system? What’s that look like?” Lanning said. “You got to make it simple for players. Rather than packaging multiple things, maybe this is a good answer versus multiple coverages, right? And ask our guys to be able to execute that at a high level, hold the standard higher.”

The coach specifically mentioned perimeter blocking, finishing plays and attacking the football as areas requiring improvement, all of which have contributed to Oregon’s difficulties sustaining drives. Those concerns aren’t simply about individual effort, but about an offense that has occasionally struggled to execute the fundamental responsibilities necessary for even well-designed plays to succeed.

“Are we finishing in a dominant position? Are we blocking on the perimeter the way we need to? Are we attacking the ball and really coach the fundamentals?” Lanning said. “I think a lot of people start to coach scheme, scheme, scheme more in those moments. And then, again, an awareness of your team, recognize your strengths, be able to play into that.”

The offensive line remains central to that process, particularly after Nebraska identified pre-snap tendencies that helped its defenders anticipate Oregon’s rushing intentions. Lanning acknowledged that the Cornhuskers recognized information in Oregon’s stances and used it to close running lanes, forcing the Ducks to make adjustments as the game progressed. Oregon eventually found success by changing formations, identifying Nebraska’s responses to empty sets and taking advantage of the different defensive reaction when Raiola entered.

The emergence of freshman Tommy Tofi provided another encouraging development, although Lanning was careful to distinguish his physical potential from the technical consistency required to become a dependable offensive lineman.

“He’s big. He can move bodies, right? There’s some real positive in some of those moments, what he was able to create at times in the run game, being able to get some movement on some guys up front,” Lanning said. “There’s also some misses that he has that’s going to come with more time and more experience. What you have to weigh in our situation with a young player like Tommy that you know is going to be really, really good is there’s going to be mistakes that happen within there as well, especially with the variety of defenses you can get.”

Running back Dierre Hill echoed that assessment Tuesday, describing the confidence that comes from working behind a lineman capable of creating space while acknowledging that the offensive group must continue developing together. “Tommy’s a big guy. Obviously, we’ve got to keep growing, but whenever he’s in there, he can make a lot of space,” Hill said. “So, yeah, it’s good to run behind all of my guys, for sure.”

Hill also emphasized that the responsibilities of the other 10 offensive players should remain consistent regardless of who takes the snap. Oregon’s players have practiced with multiple quarterbacks throughout the season, and Hill believes that preparation should allow the offense to function without significant disruption when a change becomes necessary.

“Honestly, it starts in practice, to be honest,” Hill said. “We rotate all of our quarterbacks and we get reps with all of our quarterbacks. So we’re very confident in each and every one of our quarterbacks. And we know coach wouldn’t put them out there if we didn’t trust them. So really just doing our jobs. That’s the best way we can help them. Whoever’s out there, which quarterback is out there, just doing our job and the rest will take care of itself.”

Young Players Are Creating New Opportunities

Injuries have created frustration for Oregon, but they have also accelerated opportunities for players who might otherwise have remained in developmental roles. Freshman receiver Jalen Lott provided one of the more encouraging examples against Nebraska, contributing during meaningful fourth-quarter possessions after developing confidence through his practice work.

Lanning acknowledged Wednesday that Lott has shown enough to warrant additional opportunities, while Hill described the satisfaction of watching a younger teammate translate preparation into production.

“Jalen’s obviously presented some sparks and done some good stuff for us, so continue to find ways to get him involved,” Lanning said. Hill offered a similar perspective, explaining, “I was very excited for him. Just seeing him throughout practices, just building that confidence. This is great. You know, a young guy coming in and just learning fast and being able to help us is truly amazing. And I love to see him succeed.”

Raiola discussed the importance of working with Oregon’s younger receivers through the summer and during demanding weekly practices, particularly when injuries have forced the offense to develop chemistry more quickly than originally anticipated. Those repetitions have become increasingly valuable because the players are not simply learning assignments, but attempting to develop the trust necessary to execute in critical situations.

“They come to work every day and they show up and they learn and they grow,” Raiola said. “Tuesday and Wednesday we get after it on the practice field, and that gives them a lot of confidence being able to go against our defense, and they give us really good looks.”

Lanning also noted the larger developmental foundation of Oregon’s roster, revealing that 83% of the Ducks’ snaps this season have come from players who originally entered the program as high school recruits. That statistic offers an interesting perspective on the team’s response to injuries, particularly because the current circumstances have placed additional responsibility on players whose development has occurred primarily within Oregon’s system.

The challenge is making sure those opportunities translate into consistent execution rather than occasional moments of individual brilliance. Younger players can provide energy and athleticism, but Oregon needs them to become dependable enough that the offense can function without constantly compensating for inexperience.

Oregon’s Defense Has Found Its Identity

While the offensive staff continues searching for answers, Oregon’s defense has undergone a more encouraging transformation. The Ducks have become increasingly effective since their disappointing performance against Oklahoma State, and players speaking this week identified better communication, simplified responsibilities and greater discipline within the defensive structure as the primary reasons.

Nasir Wyatt offered perhaps the clearest explanation Tuesday when asked about the improvement along Oregon’s defensive front. Rather than focusing on individual production, Wyatt described a group that has learned to trust its assignments and allow opportunities to develop naturally within the scheme.

“I just feel like everybody just playing really the call,” Wyatt said. “Everybody not really playing for themselves and everybody playing for just something bigger than just them and their own personal goals, including myself, not playing to make sacks or make plays. Just everybody playing within the scheme of the defense and then letting the plays come to them.”

That improvement didn’t happen without adjustments, particularly after opponents began using additional protection and different running concepts to neutralize Oregon’s talented edge rushers. Wyatt acknowledged that the Oklahoma State game exposed some of those challenges and forced the defensive staff to reconsider how it prepared players for the techniques opponents were using.

“We knew how skilled we were at the front position, so we knew how teams were going to attack us,” Wyatt said. “Got to Oklahoma State and they started to use chippers and different personnel, split zone, different things to try to slow us down, just avoid one-on-one rushes with me, Tayo and Tatum. We just had to adapt.”

The response included additional work against blocking schemes designed to disrupt pass rushers and more deliberate preparation for the protection adjustments opponents had begun making. Wyatt credited defensive coordinator Chris Hampton for simplifying assignments and creating opportunities for players to operate more instinctively.

“I feel like Coach Hampton, he’s always had great calls, but I feel like now he’s just starting to keep it more simpler for us, as simple as possible to where we can just play fast,” Wyatt said. “I feel like he’s done a great job at knowing what calls work and don’t work and scratching things off that’s hurt us within the previous games.”

The result has been a defense that appears more comfortable with its responsibilities and less dependent on individual players attempting to create extraordinary plays. That doesn’t mean Oregon has eliminated mistakes, particularly on third-and-long situations, but the improvement has been significant enough that the defense has become the team’s most dependable unit.

Lanning offered considerable praise for Hampton and the defensive staff while emphasizing that the improvement remains incomplete. He identified specific third-down breakdowns against Nebraska, including conversions on third-and-22 and third-and-17, as reminders that even an otherwise successful defensive performance can contain mistakes requiring attention.

“I think the entire defensive staff has done a really good job,” Lanning said. “I think that’s credit to continuous improvement and the opportunity to keep working and finding things. Even after that game, they’re going to be the most critical of themselves. They’re receiving a lot of praise, I’m sure, right now, deservedly for playing well.”

The coach cautioned against allowing that recognition to reduce the urgency surrounding continued improvement, particularly when Oregon’s offensive struggles have made defensive consistency increasingly important.

“I think the key is never get infatuated with the praise, right? There’s growth in there somewhere and that’s what the defense is focused on, is continue to grow. And hopefully don’t spend any time reading your press clippings because we can play better than we did.”

Passing the Torch: A Defense Willing to Carry the Weight

Perhaps the most revealing theme of the week came when Wyatt was asked whether Oregon’s defensive players feel additional pressure because the offense has struggled to score. His response suggested that the Ducks have developed a clearer understanding of complementary football, particularly during games when one unit must compensate for the difficulties of another.

“Really just knowing that Coach Lanning talks about it all the time, it’s passing the torch,” Wyatt said. “And as soon as we get off defense, we pass the torch to offense. And then if it don’t go right for them, they pass the torch back to us. So it’s just knowing once we get those moments, we got to just put out the fire.”

Wyatt revealed that Hampton has reinforced that philosophy by showing players examples from the Baltimore Ravens defenses led by Ray Lewis, emphasizing the importance of controlling field position and refusing to surrender points. The historical example has become a useful reference for Oregon’s defenders as they navigate games in which the offense has struggled to provide the kind of scoring support that characterized earlier portions of the season.

“Coach Ham does a good job. He shows us videos about Ray Lewis and that Baltimore Ravens team about how they had their third-string quarterback in or second string, and they went all the way to the Super Bowl,” Wyatt said. “Ray Lewis, all he talked about was scoring on D, stopping them on D, nobody passing the 50.”

The message has resonated with Oregon’s defensive players, who increasingly view difficult field-position situations as opportunities rather than additional burdens.

“That’s all we talk about. When we go out there and offense may do whatever they do, they get stopped, they get a turnover, that’s our mindset. They don’t pass the 50 and we put out the fire,” Wyatt explained.

Lanning acknowledged Wednesday that Oregon has not frequently found itself in a position where the defense must carry such a significant portion of the responsibility. His teams have traditionally been capable of producing enough offense to overcome occasional defensive difficulties, but the current circumstances require a more balanced understanding of how victories can be constructed.

“We’ve been on the other side of things where you’ve got to outscore the other team, and I’ve always told our guys there’s going to be moments in time where one side’s got to put the other side on their back and go take advantage of it,” Lanning said. “The game can be played in a lot of different ways. We’ve just always been the team that has played it with putting a lot of points on the board. But you’ve got to be able to adjust and adapt based on what your team’s doing well and then recognize those moments and play in it.”

That adjustment may become one of the most important developments of Oregon’s season. The Ducks are learning that they don’t necessarily have to win every game through overwhelming offensive production, provided they remain disciplined enough to avoid wasting the opportunities their defense creates.

The Secondary Continues Developing Through Injuries

Oregon’s defensive improvement has also benefited from younger players responding to opportunities created by injuries. Peyton Woodyard has assumed a more prominent role following Aaron Flowers’ injury, while Devin Jackson has continued developing behind him, giving the Ducks additional flexibility in the secondary.

Lanning praised both players Wednesday, emphasizing that the coaching staff already viewed them as capable contributors before their responsibilities increased.

“If they touch the field for us, we see them as starters,” Lanning said. “And Peyton’s played a significant role for us throughout the year. Devin’s a great example of a young guy that’s continuing to get better and better and better.”

The coach acknowledged that Jackson’s increased opportunities have accelerated his development, but cautioned that improvement remains an ongoing process rather than something completed through a few successful performances.

“Certainly injury provided an opportunity for DJ to get more reps, but he’s done a good job with those reps. And with that said, there’s still cleanup. There’s still areas to get better. He’s going to be a really good player.”

Woodyard, meanwhile, described the emotional difficulty of seeing Flowers sidelined while emphasizing the relationship that continues to connect the defensive backs. The increased responsibility hasn’t fundamentally changed his approach to preparation, even if the number of snaps and the importance of individual assignments have become more significant.

“I mean, that’s my brother. I wish he was out there with us. We’re doing everything for him, man,” Woodyard said. “We were texting him all the time, just like, hey man, love you, bro. He was like, hey man, good game. Y’all boys played your heart out.”

For Woodyard, the opportunity to play more extensively is something he has prepared for throughout the season, and he believes the best response is to maintain the same habits that allowed him to earn the coaching staff’s confidence.

“I don’t think it’s changed much. I feel like it’s just been same preparation and everything. It’s just maybe you’re just on the field a little bit more,” he said.

That approach reflects a larger theme within Oregon’s defensive development. Players are accepting additional responsibility without treating those changes as an invitation to abandon the assignments and preparation that made them successful in the first place.

Special Teams and the Importance of Preparation

Oregon’s special teams have become increasingly important as the Ducks navigate their offensive inconsistency, placing greater responsibility on kicker Gage Hurych. His performance against Nebraska reinforced the confidence Oregon has developed in its field-goal operation, and his comments Tuesday offered insight into a player whose approach emphasizes repetition rather than the circumstances surrounding an individual attempt.

“My confidence is great right now,” Hurych said. “I do my best to not get my confidence out of my performance, but out of my preparation. So my preparation has been great so far this season. I feel like that’s shown on the field.”

Hurych explained that Oregon’s offensive difficulties do not fundamentally change his approach, even when the team becomes more dependent on field goals. The circumstances surrounding a particular kick may carry different consequences for the outcome of a game, but the mechanics and preparation remain consistent.

“I try not to treat any game different than any other game,” Hurych said. “I mean, every kick’s the same for me. I’m going in, same uprights, same process, so really just treating every kick the same regardless of how the team’s playing.”

He also credited the work of his teammates in the kicking operation, particularly long snapper RJ and holder Bailey, whose coordination has become increasingly dependable through months of repetition. Lanning praised those specialists Wednesday while acknowledging that Oregon’s kickoff execution still needs improvement, particularly when attempting directional or shorter kicks.

“Nobody ever recognizes specialists unless it doesn’t go right,” Lanning said. “But RJ’s been outstanding. Bailey’s been outstanding. Gage has been outstanding in those areas. And then there’s still areas for growth. We can be better when it comes to our kickoffs and the locations those go in.”

Hurych acknowledged some of those mistakes himself, explaining that a handful of unsuccessful squib kicks resulted from mishits rather than any broader problem with the unit’s approach. The larger theme from his comments was an appreciation for preparation and the discipline required to remain consistent when the circumstances become more demanding.

Hill’s Homecoming Adds a Personal Element to Illinois Week

Saturday’s trip to Champaign carries additional significance for Hill, who grew up in Illinois and expects a substantial number of family members and supporters to attend the game. The running back was enthusiastic about returning to his home state, describing the opportunity as something he has anticipated since the schedule became known.

“It definitely is a homecoming game for me,” Hill said. “Probably have the whole stadium, like whole section of literally just all of our fans, from a lot of my fans actually, just from being in that area. I’m very excited.”

The opportunity carries meaning beyond simply playing in front of familiar faces, particularly because Hill recognizes that younger players from his hometown will be watching him compete at the collegiate level.

“It’s a lot of young kids that look up to me and just my hometown,” Hill said. “I’m just very excited to be able to go play there close to home and just be with my brothers here and just go out there and have fun, fly around.”

Hill also offered an interesting admission about his childhood football loyalties, explaining that he had never particularly followed Illinois despite growing up in the state. He described himself as someone who was always more interested in participating in sports than following local teams, adding that he had actually been an Oregon fan while growing up.

As for managing the additional attention and emotion surrounding the homecoming, Hill believes the experience should provide energy rather than become a distraction. His personality has always been an important part of his game, and he sees the opportunity to play near home as another reason to embrace the moment without allowing it to become larger than his responsibilities.

“I’m an energy guy. I feel like I can help the team and lift the team up when I’m in good spirits,” Hill said. “I feel like the team is in good spirits as well. So just me having fun and just being who I am, not letting the moment be too big.”

For a team that has spent much of the previous two weeks working through frustration and uncertainty, Hill’s enthusiasm offers another perspective on the importance of maintaining confidence without ignoring the challenges that remain.

Final Practice Takeaways: Learning to Win Differently

The most revealing development from Oregon’s practice week wasn’t a definitive quarterback announcement or a dramatic change in personnel. It was the growing recognition that the Ducks may have to approach winning football differently than they did when the season began, particularly when injuries and offensive inconsistency continue to influence their available options.

Lanning continues evaluating his quarterbacks, the offensive staff is emphasizing simpler execution and younger players are being asked to contribute in increasingly important situations. Meanwhile, Oregon’s defense has developed a more cohesive identity, with players describing a unit that is communicating more effectively and trusting its assignments rather than chasing individual production.

The coaching staff has also shown a willingness to reconsider how Oregon manages difficult game situations. Protecting the football, controlling field position and allowing the defense to influence the outcome have become more prominent considerations as the offense attempts to regain its footing.

There remains considerable work ahead, particularly against an Illinois defense capable of disguising pressure and an offense with experienced receivers who can punish mistakes. The Illini have also enjoyed an additional week of preparation, meaning Oregon must be ready for adjustments that may not be apparent from the available game film.

Yet the Ducks appear to understand the challenge. Raiola emphasized preparation and trust, Hill focused on execution and responsibility, Wyatt described a defense learning to play together and Lanning repeatedly returned to the importance of adapting without abandoning the fundamentals that make a team successful.

Oregon’s comeback against Nebraska demonstrated that the Ducks remain capable of finding solutions under pressure, but Saturday offers an opportunity to demonstrate something more meaningful. The objective now is to turn the lessons from a difficult stretch into a performance that doesn’t require another dramatic rescue, allowing a defense that has found its footing and an offense still developing its identity to begin moving in the same direction.

Oregon Practice Report: Competition…
