There is an obvious problem with trying to make too much of advanced statistics one game into a college football season. We have one data point.
Oregon’s came against a Boise State team that appears to be pretty good. Oklahoma State’s came in a 24-10 loss at Tulsa. Neither is enough to tell us exactly what these teams will become over the next three months, especially in Oklahoma State’s case given how much of the roster and coaching staff changed during the offseason.
There is still something useful here, though. We can combine what happened last week with the systems that adjust for opponent and still carry some of the preseason information we had before anybody played a game.
When we do that, the gap between Oregon and Oklahoma State is not particularly difficult to find.
