With both programs facing unexpected adversity, Dan Lanning and Ryan Day are searching for answers ahead of Saturday’s meeting in Columbus. Their approaches reveal two teams confronting similar challenges, but from very different directions.
There was an interesting contrast in the messages coming from Eugene and Columbus this week, even if the circumstances surrounding Oregon and Ohio State have become remarkably similar. Both entered the season with national championship expectations, both have experienced significant disappointment and both have lost their starting quarterbacks at a point in the season when consistency and experience become particularly valuable. Yet the messages from Dan Lanning and Ryan Day suggest two coaches approaching the same challenge from different perspectives.
Lanning emerged from Oregon’s victory over Northwestern talking about freedom, confidence and the importance of allowing his players to attack rather than becoming consumed with avoiding mistakes. Day, meanwhile, spent much of his Tuesday press conference examining the breakdowns that contributed to Ohio State’s loss at USC, repeatedly emphasizing accountability, preparation and the need for everyone in his program to perform better. Neither coach is interested in lowering expectations simply because the season has become more difficult than anticipated.
