Order, Movement, and a Few Recruiting Notes
Earlier today in Flock Talk: The Illusion of Order, I wrote about the NCAA’s renewed attempt to police tampering and restore what it believes is competitive balance.
The short version is this: enforcement may sound strong, but the structural imbalance remains. Coaches can move freely. Administrators can move freely. Contracts can be negotiated midseason. But when players explore alternatives, we suddenly rediscover the language of restriction.
The NCAA can say it is punishing schools. It can threaten suspensions, recruiting restrictions, and public infractions cases. But if the practical effect is limiting athlete mobility in a marketplace that already functions like a professional one, the legal and philosophical tension remains unresolved.
You cannot modernize enforcement without modernizing the underlying assumptions.
And while that broader debate plays out in boardrooms and courtrooms, recruiting continues exactly the way it always has: relationships, timing, leverage, opportunity.
With that in mind, a few recruiting thoughts as we head deeper into spring.
