A weekend that once looked like it could carry a little more defensive line drama lost some of that edge before it even arrived.
Marcus Fakatou canceled his Oregon visit. Kasi Currie eliminated the Ducks. Two of the premier West Coast defensive line targets in the 2027 class were no longer part of the weekend, and even if both had long been considered uphill recruitments, there was still a sting to watching those doors close before Oregon had one more chance to change the conversation.
That naturally led to a familiar question.
Should Oregon now go all in on Brayden Parks?
It is an understandable thought, especially with Parks making his way to Eugene next weekend and Notre Dame still sitting in a very strong position. When the board takes a hit, the easy answer is to simply throw more at the next player in line and force the issue.
But that is not how good recruiting operations work.
Parks is worth what Parks is worth. Oregon has a number, a range and a plan. Going beyond that range out of frustration over Fakatou and Currie would not just create risk in one recruitment. It would create a precedent. It would tell the market that Oregon can be moved off its structure when the board gets thin, and that is a dangerous way to build a roster.
The more telling part of the week is what Oregon has not done.
There has not been a flood of panic offers to secondary defensive line targets. There has not been a visible scramble. There has not been a sudden shift that makes it look like the staff was caught off guard by Fakatou or Currie landing elsewhere.
That matters.
The Ducks knew those recruitments were difficult. They took their shot anyway because that is what serious programs do. But their broader plan was never built entirely around either player, and that is where this weekend becomes more interesting.
The story is not only about the players who did not make it to Eugene.
It is about the ones who did.
