The transition from July to August usually comes with a familiar change in the Oregon football conversation.
Recruiting does not disappear, but it begins sharing the stage with depth charts, position competitions, injuries, practice observations and the first meaningful clues about what the coming season might look like. Oregon’s media day Monday will accelerate that transition. When the Ducks take the practice field Wednesday, the 2026 season will no longer be an abstract collection of predictions and possibilities.
Before Oregon reaches that point, however, there is another transition taking place behind the scenes.
Dan Lanning left Big Ten Media Days in Chicago and returned for a coaches retreat in Central Oregon. He described the retreat as the final stop before the staff would “hit the ground running” into fall camp.
The fellowship component matters, particularly for a staff entering its first season with Drew Mehringer coordinating the offense and Chris Hampton coordinating the defense. But I suspect the retreat also represented something more consequential than an opportunity to spend time together away from the football facility.
It was the final chance for Oregon’s coaches to align the plan before handing responsibility for executing it to the players.
