Scouting Report: Anthony 'Tank' Jones
Scouting Report: Anthony "Tank" Jones – EDGE – Class of 2026
6-3, 245 | No. 18 Overall | No. 5 EDGE Nationally (Rivals)
Anthony “Tank” Jones has evolved into one of the most dominant edge defenders in the 2026 class—and his growth across three seasons of varsity tape is as striking as his on-field explosiveness. From a hybrid role as a freshman to becoming a full-time menace off the edge as a junior, Jones’ trajectory suggests not only high-level collegiate production but also long-term NFL potential if his current rate of development continues
Physical Traits & Athletic Profile
Jones is already well-developed physically at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, with a powerful build and strong lower body that allows him to generate impressive torque and explosion out of both two- and three-point stances. While not the twitchiest edge rusher in the class, he more than compensates with leverage, violent hands, and a relentless motor. A three-sport athlete, Jones brings sneaky athleticism and coordination, traits that show up repeatedly on film in both pass-rushing reps and backside pursuit.
Year-by-Year Development
Freshman Year
As a ninth grader, Jones played multiple roles, seeing time at linebacker and even wide receiver. His early tape shows flashes of athleticism and raw power, particularly in space. He was still leaner at the time, but already displayed an innate feel for angles and an ability to disengage from blockers with surprising physicality for a player still adjusting to the edge. The foundation for his pass-rush arsenal was visible, even if the technique was still developing.
Sophomore Year
Jones made a full-time move to the defensive line and began turning heads nationally. His sophomore film highlights a significant jump in strength and body control. He showcased an elite first step, better hand placement, and an improved ability to bend and dip under offensive tackles. He didn’t just win with bull rushes—Jones added a rip move, a swipe technique, and counters that allowed him to beat double teams. His motor was relentless, frequently chasing down plays from the backside and flashing sideline-to-sideline range.
Junior Year
Jones’ junior campaign cemented his status as one of the elite EDGE prospects in the nation. Now tipping the scales at 245 pounds, he became virtually unblockable in 1-on-1 situations. His get-off remains a defining trait, but it’s the maturity in his pass-rush plan that stands out. He routinely sets up offensive tackles with stutters, jab steps, and inside-out counters. In 2023, he racked up 75 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 20 QB hurries, and two forced fumbles—while drawing consistent double teams. His physicality in the run game also reached a new level, anchoring against pulling guards and blowing up zone schemes with power and leverage.
Strengths
-
Elite Motor: Jones never stops moving—whether pressuring the quarterback or chasing down a run play 30 yards away. It’s the trait that makes him not just effective, but disruptive.
-
Advanced Pass Rush Repertoire: As a junior, Jones showed the ability to win with both speed and power, mixing in a variety of hand techniques and inside counters.
-
Run Defense: Strong at the point of attack with natural leverage and the power to stack and shed. Doesn’t just shoot gaps—he plays with purpose and control.
-
Positional Versatility: Can play as a stand-up 3-4 OLB or slide inside on passing downs. Has the frame and instincts to move across the defensive front.
Physical Tools: College-ready frame with room to grow. Explosive lower half and strong base make him hard to move even when doubled.
Areas for Continued Development
-
Edge Bend & Flexibility: While he’s added more finesse to his game, his hip flexibility still isn’t elite. Improving his bend will make his speed rush even more dangerous.
-
Coverage Technique: Though athletic enough to play in space, he hasn’t been asked to drop in coverage much. Expanding this part of his game would add scheme flexibility at the next level.
Refinement Against Elite Tackles: He’s dominant at the high school level, but further refinement of timing and counters will help him win against more technically sound offensive tackles in college.
Projection
Tank Jones projects as a high-floor 3-4 outside linebacker who can be a day-one contributor in run defense while developing into a true three-down defender. His relentless motor, polished hand usage, and physical build give him a chance to become a cornerstone edge presence in college and a future pro. With continued progression, there’s no reason he can’t hear his name called on an NFL Draft night down the line.
Comparison: A more polished high school version of Josh Uche (Michigan/New England Patriots) with shades of Rashan Gary in motor and versatility.
Ceiling: All-Conference Power 4 starter with NFL upside
Floor: Productive rotational EDGE and special teams contributor early in college
Final Grade: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5-Star Talent) |
